About the role
A medical sales representative promotes a company's medicines to doctors, pharmacists and hospital buyers within a territory. You learn the products in depth, plan calls, present clinical information accurately and follow strict ethical rules on promotion. The panel is checking your scientific understanding, your communication with busy professionals and your integrity.
How to prepare
- Revise the pharmacology basics behind the company's main products and their competitors.
- Practise a short, accurate product presentation for a busy doctor who has two minutes to spare.
- Prepare to explain how you would plan visits across a territory of hospitals, clinics and pharmacies.
- Think about how you would respond if a doctor asked for a gift or inducement in return for prescribing.
- Prepare a story about building trust with a professional who was uninterested at first.
Common mistakes
- Overstating what a medicine does or making claims that are not in the approved information.
- Ignoring the ethics rules on gifts and incentives.
- Treating every doctor the same instead of learning their practice and needs.
