About the role

This interview tests whether you can command a vessel safely while managing people, voyage demands and shore-side expectations. The panel will look for disciplined judgement, calm emergency leadership and practical knowledge of bridge operations. Strong answers explain what you would assess, decide, record and communicate.

How to prepare

  1. Review passage planning, bridge resource management and restricted-visibility decisions for the vessel types you know.
  2. Prepare examples of an emergency, a near miss and a difficult command decision you handled.
  3. Revisit how you manage fatigue, watchkeeping standards and conflict among senior crew.
  4. Practise explaining how you balance safe navigation with weather, berth and charter constraints.
  5. Check the official flag-state or licensing authority for current certificate and endorsement rules relevant to the role.

Common mistakes

  • Giving textbook emergency sequences without stating your immediate priorities and commands.
  • Accepting commercial pressure without setting a clear safety boundary.
  • Blaming individual crew members instead of examining supervision, fatigue and procedures.
  • Describing decisions without saying what you recorded or reported.
