About the role
A key account manager looks after a company's most valuable clients and grows revenue from them over time. At senior level you build account plans, manage relationships with senior decision makers, lead commercial negotiations and step in when service goes wrong. The panel is deciding whether you can protect and grow major accounts while protecting margin.
How to prepare
- Prepare a story about growing a major account, with the plan, the people involved and the revenue result.
- Be ready to explain how you handled a tough renewal or price negotiation.
- Have an example of a service failure with a key client and how you rebuilt trust.
- Think about how you map decision makers and influencers in a large client organisation.
- Prepare your figures: accounts managed, revenue grown, retention and margin.
Common mistakes
- Relying on one friendly contact instead of building wider relationships.
- Giving away margin to keep a client happy without a plan.
- Describing account management as service only, with no growth story.
