About the role

A junior structural engineer supports analysis, design, detailing and coordination under professional supervision. The interview explores whether you understand load paths and member behaviour, can spot suspect model output, and communicate changes without presenting unchecked work as final design.

How to prepare

  1. Review load paths, support conditions, bending, shear, deflection and stability for common structural members.
  2. Practise explaining how you would check an analysis model before relying on its output.
  3. Study typical reinforced concrete drawings and identify dimensions, levels, laps and areas of congestion.
  4. Prepare one structural project and separate your analysis, modelling and detailing work from the team's work.
  5. Revise how model and drawing revisions should be recorded and communicated.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting software output without checking supports, loads, units and expected behaviour.
  • Discussing reinforcement only as an area value without considering spacing, cover or congestion.
  • Treating an architectural change as a drawing edit with no effect on the load path.
  • Presenting work as approved when it still requires a senior engineer's review.
