About the role
An internal auditor checks that a company's controls work and its risks are managed. You plan audits based on risk, test controls, look for signs of fraud and write reports that managers act on. The panel wants to see sound judgement, independence and reports that are clear and fair.
How to prepare
- Prepare an audit you led from planning to report, including the key finding and how management responded.
- Be clear on the difference between a control that is poorly designed and one that is not followed.
- Think of how you keep good working relationships while still reporting uncomfortable findings.
- Refresh common fraud red flags in procurement, payroll and cash handling.
- Know how you follow up to confirm that agreed actions were actually completed.
Common mistakes
- Writing findings that blame people instead of explaining the control gap.
- Sampling without being able to explain why that sample size and selection made sense.
- Giving recommendations that are vague or too costly for the business to adopt.
