About the role
This interview tests how you would lead a football academy as a development system, not simply a collection of youth teams. The panel wants a credible player pathway, a clear coaching direction, strong safeguarding judgement and evidence that you can align families, staff and senior football leaders.
How to prepare
- Map how players would progress between age groups and into senior training, including decision points and support for late developers.
- Prepare an example of improving coaching quality across several teams without making every coach work identically.
- Review how you would handle player welfare concerns, confidential reporting and appropriate escalation.
- Choose measures that show player and coach development as well as competitive performance.
- Plan how you would allocate limited pitches, staffing and development resources across the academy.
Common mistakes
- Judging the academy only by trophies and league positions.
- Promising a single playing style without explaining how it changes by age and development need.
- Treating families as a nuisance instead of setting fair and consistent communication boundaries.
- Giving a vague safeguarding response with no immediate protection or reporting route.
