About the role
The Head of Early Years leads learning, care and safeguarding across a provision for young children. Expect the panel to test your understanding of play, language-rich interactions, staff deployment, developmentally useful assessment and respectful partnership with families.
How to prepare
- Prepare an example of how you improved the quality of play or adult interaction across a team.
- Review the steps you take when a safeguarding or supervision concern is reported.
- Plan how you would evaluate indoor and outdoor provision from a child's perspective.
- Think of a sensitive conversation with a family about a child's development.
- Be ready to explain how you reduce unnecessary observation paperwork while retaining useful evidence.
Common mistakes
- Describing play as free time without explaining the adult's professional role.
- Discussing a serious incident without immediate safety and reporting actions.
- Using developmental expectations as labels rather than prompts for support.
