About the role
A General Counsel interview is about enterprise leadership as much as legal expertise. The panel is testing whether you can shape strategy, surface material risk and remain an independent adviser when pressure is high. It also wants evidence that you can build a focused legal function and communicate effectively with executives and the board.
How to prepare
- Choose examples where your advice changed a strategic decision, contained a crisis or improved governance.
- Form a clear view of how the organisation's strategy could change its legal risk profile.
- Prepare to explain how you prioritise work, design the legal team and control external legal spend.
- Practise turning a complex issue into options, consequences and one concise recommendation.
- Identify the evidence you use to assess legal function quality, responsiveness and business impact.
Common mistakes
- Presenting yourself only as the most senior technical lawyer rather than an enterprise leader.
- Describing every risk as unacceptable without offering proportionate options.
- Using legal workload as the main evidence that the function creates value.
- Claiming independence without showing how you influence difficult senior stakeholders.
