About the role

A gender programme assistant helps a team identify and reduce barriers that affect participation and outcomes. The interview will test your understanding of inclusion, confidentiality and the limits of an assistant's role when sensitive concerns arise. The panel wants thoughtful, practical answers grounded in listening rather than stereotypes.

How to prepare

  1. Review how timing, location, safety, care duties and social expectations can affect participation.
  2. Learn the difference between listening to a disclosure and investigating it.
  3. Prepare an example of making an activity or decision more inclusive.
  4. Practise discussing participation data without presenting assumptions as facts.
  5. Think through how you would challenge a colleague's stereotype respectfully.

Common mistakes

  • Speaking about women or men as though every person has the same experience.
  • Questioning a person closely after a sensitive disclosure.
  • Treating attendance figures alone as proof that an activity is inclusive.
  • Offering personal advice instead of following safe referral procedures.
