About the role
This interview focuses on controlling the finances of a business with high transaction volumes, several payment partners and complex settlement flows. The panel wants evidence that you can run a reliable close, resolve reconciliation breaks, make defensible accounting judgements and maintain visibility over cash and customer funds. They will also test how you improve a finance function without weakening day-to-day control.
How to prepare
- Map a typical payment from customer initiation through processor settlement, bank movement and general ledger posting.
- Prepare an example of shortening or strengthening a close while preserving review evidence.
- Review how you investigate aged reconciling items and assign ownership for resolution.
- Practise explaining a complex accounting judgement in plain language to a non-finance leader.
- Think through the reports needed to distinguish operating cash from customer and settlement balances.
Common mistakes
- Treating a reconciliation difference as timing without obtaining supporting evidence.
- Relying on spreadsheets without ownership, access control, review or change discipline.
- Confusing cash in a bank account with cash available for the company to spend.
- Focusing on a faster close while leaving material balances unsupported.
