About the role
An NGO finance assistant processes and files the transactions that allow programmes to operate and report responsibly. The panel wants evidence that you understand basic bookkeeping, can reconcile records, check grant-related costs and maintain integrity when colleagues are under pressure.
How to prepare
- Review debits, credits, cashbooks, payment vouchers and bank or petty cash reconciliations.
- Practise explaining how you trace a difference from a ledger back to source documents.
- Prepare an example of checking detailed figures and finding an error.
- Think through how you would question an expense respectfully while keeping work moving.
- Review the spreadsheet formulas and controls you use for routine finance work.
Common mistakes
- Processing an urgent payment before checking approval and supporting records.
- Forcing a reconciliation to balance without investigating the difference.
- Treating a budget balance as proof that every proposed expense is allowable.
