About the role
A fibre optic technician interview is practical and evidence-led. The interviewer wants clean, repeatable splicing, correct use of test equipment, safe handling of laser and glass hazards, and an organised response when a cable cut must be restored under pressure.
How to prepare
- Rehearse the full sequence for stripping, cleaning, cleaving, splicing and protecting a fibre.
- Review how contamination, a poor cleave, bending or a damaged connector increases loss.
- Practise explaining how a power meter and reflectometer answer different test questions.
- Revise safe disposal of fibre shards and controls for laser, traffic and chamber hazards.
- Think through how you would identify cores and prioritise service during a cable-cut restoration.
Common mistakes
- Touching cleaned fibre or connector faces before completing the splice or test.
- Accepting the splicer's estimated loss without an appropriate end-to-end test.
- Ignoring minimum bend radius while dressing cable and organising a splice tray.
- Rushing an outage repair without identifying fibres and recording the final test results.
