About the role
This is a technical interview for an officer responsible for shipboard electrical, electronic and control systems. The panel will assess how you read evidence, protect people and equipment during isolation, and coordinate maintenance when a system is operationally critical.
How to prepare
- Revise shipboard generation, protection, distribution, motor control and emergency power arrangements.
- Prepare fault-finding examples involving sensors, automation, motors or intermittent wiring problems.
- Review your process for isolation, proving dead and returning electrical equipment to service.
- Practise explaining diagrams and measurements in a logical diagnostic sequence.
- Check the official issuing body for current licence and certificate rules relevant to the position.
Common mistakes
- Suggesting live work or bypassing protection without a sound safety justification.
- Replacing sensors or boards before checking supplies, wiring, signals and configuration.
- Ignoring the operational effect of an electrical shutdown on the bridge or engine room.
