About the role
A diesel mechanic keeps heavy vehicles reliable by diagnosing faults, completing repairs and carrying out preventive maintenance. This interview focuses on diesel engines as well as braking, cooling and driveline systems. The panel is looking for safe working habits, sound test evidence and the judgement to stop an unsafe vehicle from returning to service.
How to prepare
- Prepare examples of diagnosing loss of power, overheating and repeat component failures.
- Revise how engine, fuel, air and exhaust conditions can produce similar symptoms.
- Review safe isolation, lifting and stored-energy controls for heavy vehicles.
- Think through a complete post-repair inspection and road-test handover.
- Prepare an example of finding additional safety-critical work during routine maintenance.
Common mistakes
- Changing expensive parts before carrying out basic checks and measurements.
- Discussing engine repairs while ignoring braking, cooling and driveline risks.
- Working under a heavy vehicle without explaining how it is safely supported.
- Releasing a vehicle because of operational pressure despite an unresolved safety fault.
