About the role
This interview covers the accounting behind what a factory makes, consumes and holds in inventory. The panel wants someone who can maintain credible product costs, reconcile operational data, explain variances and help non-finance colleagues act on the findings.
How to prepare
- Review how material, labour and overhead costs flow into finished goods and work in progress.
- Prepare an example of a cost variance you traced to a specific operational cause.
- Practise explaining standard cost and actual cost differences to a production manager.
- Refresh your approach to inventory counts, reconciliations and period-end production entries.
- Think through how exchange rates, waste, downtime and changes in pack mix can affect unit cost.
Common mistakes
- Reciting accounting formulas without linking them to factory activity.
- Posting an inventory adjustment before investigating timing and transaction errors.
- Reporting a large variance without separating price, usage, volume and mix drivers.
- Giving factory colleagues financial detail without a clear operational action.
