About the role
A collections officer contacts customers who are behind on loan or bill payments and agrees how they will pay. The job involves many calls a day, negotiating payment plans, recording every promise accurately and following the law and regulator guidance on fair treatment. The panel wants someone firm but respectful, who never threatens or shames customers.
How to prepare
- Revise the rules on fair debt collection and what conduct is off limits, such as threats or contacting a customer's friends and family.
- Practise a calm, firm tone for asking for payment without sounding aggressive.
- Prepare a story about negotiating with someone who was upset or avoiding you.
- Think about how you would set up a realistic payment plan for someone in genuine hardship.
- Practise keeping accurate notes of every call, promise and follow-up date.
Common mistakes
- Suggesting pressure tactics that are unlawful or shame the customer.
- Accepting promises to pay with no clear date, amount or follow-up.
- Taking rude responses personally and losing composure.
