About the role
This interview covers how clinical data moves from a study protocol into a controlled, reviewable database and a reliable final dataset. The panel wants careful validation, efficient query handling, reconciliation, privacy and sound judgement about whether data is ready for analysis and lock.
How to prepare
- Review how protocol requirements map to case report forms, edit checks and a data management plan.
- Prepare an example of a data discrepancy you traced across source, system and transfer records.
- Think through testing, change control, access control and audit trail expectations for a clinical database.
- Revise query ageing, external data reconciliation and the checks that support database lock.
- Practise explaining a data risk and proposed action to both a clinical lead and a technical colleague.
Common mistakes
- Creating large numbers of edit checks without considering their clinical importance or query burden.
- Treating reconciliation as a last-minute activity rather than a planned recurring process.
- Sharing more participant data than is necessary to resolve an issue.
- Recommending database lock without clear evidence that critical review and approvals are complete.
