About the role

This role buys operational services such as road transport, freight forwarding and warehousing. The panel will look for a buyer who can define the real requirement, compare complex charging structures, negotiate usable terms and manage supplier performance without putting deliveries at risk.

How to prepare

  1. Review the cost components and service risks commonly found in transport, freight and warehousing bids.
  2. Prepare a sourcing example where you improved both commercial terms and operational reliability.
  3. Think through the questions you would ask operations before approaching logistics suppliers.
  4. Be ready to explain how you verify capacity, licences, insurance, safety controls and references.
  5. Review how service levels, escalation paths and rate adjustment rules should be documented.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the lowest base rate without normalising surcharges and likely exception costs.
  • Starting a tender before operations has agreed the routes, volumes and service expectations.
  • Making performance claims without referring to delivery records, service levels or corrective actions.
