About the role
This interview tests how you run a dependable bus service when traffic, vehicle availability and staffing change through the day. The panel is looking for firm control decisions, credible people leadership and a practical understanding of routes, depots, passenger needs and operating cost.
How to prepare
- Prepare an example of recovering a route or depot after serious disruption.
- Review how headways, punctuality, missed trips, vehicle availability and passenger complaints relate to one another.
- Practise explaining how you would allocate a limited number of buses across competing routes.
- Think through how you set expectations for controllers, dispatchers, supervisors and drivers.
- Prepare an example of improving service without weakening safety controls.
Common mistakes
- Treating punctuality as the only measure of a good service.
- Giving a disruption plan without clear authority, communication or passenger information.
- Blaming drivers before checking schedules, rosters and vehicle condition.
- Promising extra service without considering available vehicles and crews.
