About this interview
A behavioural interview asks you to describe real situations from your past to show how you work. Interviewers use it to judge teamwork, how you cope under pressure, how you handle conflict, whether you take ownership and what you learn from mistakes.
How to prepare
- Build a bank of six to eight real stories from work, school, NYSC or volunteering.
- Shape each story around the situation, your task, what you did and the result.
- Include at least one story about a mistake and what you changed afterwards.
- Practise keeping each answer to about two minutes.
- Focus on your own actions and say 'I' rather than 'we' when describing what you did.
Common mistakes
- Giving hypothetical answers about what you would do instead of what you did.
- Picking stories where nothing went wrong, which hides how you handle difficulty.
- Rambling through background and running out of time before the result.
