About this interview
A substantive asylum interview gives an applicant an opportunity to explain the basis of a protection claim in detail. The decision maker considers the account, supporting information and the rules that apply in that jurisdiction. Preparation should support truthful recall and clear communication, never a fabricated or exaggerated story, and this practice is not legal advice.
How to prepare
- Read your earlier statements and screening records so you can identify errors, translation problems or missing context.
- Create a personal timeline using only what you genuinely remember, marking dates that are approximate or unknown.
- Practise explaining relevant events in plain language without forcing yourself to add unnecessary graphic detail.
- Think through why you fear return and what happened when protection or relocation was considered.
- Check the responsible official authority's current interview guidance for your jurisdiction.
- Discuss the claim and any welfare or communication needs with a qualified legal adviser before the interview.
Common mistakes
- Inventing a date or detail to make the account appear complete.
- Memorising a script that prevents you from answering the question actually asked.
- Hiding a genuine inconsistency instead of explaining it directly.
- Assuming that another country's process or online advice applies to your jurisdiction.
- Sharing graphic details that are not needed to explain the material facts.
