About the role
An asset management intern helps research investments, monitor portfolios and prepare reports for decision-makers and clients. The interview looks for curiosity about markets, careful use of data and the ability to discuss risk and return without pretending that any outcome is certain.
How to prepare
- Follow a small set of shares, bonds or funds and note the factors that move their value.
- Revise diversification, liquidity, duration and the difference between income and capital return.
- Practise calculating a simple holding-period return and checking the source data.
- Write a short investment view with a clear thesis, evidence, risks and conditions for changing your mind.
- Prepare to explain market movements in plain language for a non-specialist client.
Common mistakes
- Presenting a market opinion as a certain forecast.
- Discussing return without addressing downside, liquidity or the investor's time horizon.
- Using market jargon when a plain explanation would be clearer.
