About the role
This interview covers the practical actuarial work behind general insurance pricing and reserving. Interviewers will test your method selection, treatment of weak data, understanding of insurance operations and ability to explain uncertainty to people who do not work with actuarial models every day.
How to prepare
- Refresh common reserving methods and the situations in which each method can mislead.
- Review how frequency, severity, expenses, reinsurance and claims inflation affect pricing decisions.
- Prepare a case where a data check or sensitivity changed your conclusion.
- Practise explaining an actuarial range and its main drivers in plain language.
- Be ready to describe your model controls, review notes and documentation standards.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a method mechanically without discussing the portfolio, data and assumptions.
- Presenting an estimate as certain when material judgement and volatility remain.
- Focusing on model output while ignoring underwriting changes, claims handling and reinsurance.
