About the role
An account planner finds the audience insight and strategic focus that make advertising more effective. You will be expected to frame business problems, interpret research, write creative briefs and persuade both clients and creative teams. The panel wants evidence that your thinking is original, disciplined and useful to the work.
How to prepare
- Select examples where your insight changed a proposition, brief or creative direction.
- Practise separating a fact, an observation and a genuine consumer insight.
- Review how you choose between desk research, interviews, groups and quantitative evidence.
- Prepare to reduce a complex category problem to one clear strategic choice.
- Study how different channels and cultural contexts can change the audience response.
Common mistakes
- Calling a broad demographic statement an insight.
- Collecting research without showing how it changes the strategic choice.
- Writing a brief with several competing propositions.
- Using planning jargon instead of making a clear argument.
