About the role
An account executive sells business software to companies, often through several meetings with different decision makers. You run discovery, demo the product, build a business case, negotiate terms and forecast which deals will close and when. The panel wants to see a disciplined process, honest forecasting and the ability to sell value rather than features.
How to prepare
- Prepare two deal stories with the customer problem, the people involved, how you handled objections and the result.
- Practise explaining the product's value in terms of money saved, risk reduced or revenue gained.
- Have your quota attainment, deal sizes and sales cycle lengths ready in clear figures.
- Think about how you handle a deal that stalls or loses its internal champion.
- Revise how you forecast and how you tell a real deal from wishful thinking.
Common mistakes
- Leading with product features instead of the customer's business problem.
- Being vague about your numbers or inflating them.
- Talking about winning deals alone, with no credit to the wider team.
